Artist Statement

Born and raised in the United States to Chinese parents who were born and raised in Peru, I experiment with found objects and gestures relating to my home and transnational culture. Reflecting upon the complex relationship to my identity and family background, my work concerns concepts of gender, language and diaspora. I repurpose obsolete technology and commodified artifacts and translate them into video, performance and installation to reinterpret their use value. My work is in dialogue with present-day technology and communication, reconciling what it means to preserve an overlooked and forgotten object, language or history. These objects and modes of communication are remnants of the past, inter-generationally inherited and re-contextualized through my own contemporary perspective.

Bio

Diana Li is an artist working in video, performance and installation. Her life and artwork are greatly influenced by her diasporic Chinese Peruvian background and female identity. She graduated from UC San Diego in 2014 with a B.A. in Ethnic Studies and Visual Arts Media, and is currently pursuing an MFA at San Francisco Art Institute. Committed to community organizing in the arts and culture, she involves herself with organizations and programs like the Center for Asian American Media, the Asian American Women Artists Association and Kearny Street Workshop's APAture Festival.
