Artist Statement

My work is inspired by nature and finding parallels with the human condition. I was captivated by the way mature lotus leaves wither and fold, in stark contrast with the vibrant new blossoms that rise from their watery habitat. In my recent works, rather than portraying idealized images of beauty and perfection, I strive to capture the beauty of imperfection. The dried, wrinkled leaves are not a reminder of our lost youth, but a celebration of beauty in all stages of life. It is by accepting our imperfections that we can achieve a state of serenity in living.

Bio

Lucy Liew is a Malaysian-American artist who studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore. Upon graduation she was awarded a Commonwealth Foundation fellowship to study at West Surrey College of Art & Design in England. In 1996, she moved to California, where she continued to develop an artistic style characterized by vivid botanical compositions that are a fusion of the real and the fantastic. Lucy’s artworks are in the collections of the UCSF Medical Center, National Art Gallery, the Patronas, the personal collection of King Halim of Malaysia, and many private collections worldwide. She has had solo and group exhibitions throughout the Bay Area, including Stanford University, the Triton Museum of Art, and San Jose Museum of Art. Her public art includes commissions by the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, Valley Children’s Hospital of Madera, and the City of San Jose. Lucy currently resides in Santa Rosa, California where she is part of the vibrant Fulton Crossing art community in Santa Rosa and the Alameda Art Works community in San Jose.
