Artist Statement

Frances Zielonka is an abstract painter. Broadly inspired by the elegant physicality of Chinese calligraphy and the vigorous individuality of Abstract Expressionism, Zielonka paints a visual language rooted in the artistic and literary traditions of both the East and West. Envisioning a line adapted from Chinese calligraphy as a fluid entity traveling between languages and practices through abstraction, Zielonka presents a cultural landscape that expands infinitely by the means of its own boundaries.
Zielonka explores the lasting ideas, experiences, and portrayals of the modern woman through the lens of literature and language. By incorporating different forms of writing, Zielonka’s work examines how ideas are manipulated and communicated across generations and geopolitical borders, and how multilingual and multicultural experiences can construct competing and complementary notions of beauty and femininity.
