Artist Statement

I express creativity and explore my identity through words and food. The current exhibition,Transformation, comes at a time of transformation in my career: I am on sabbatical from my regular profession as a doctor to pursue my passion for cooking and have just completed professional culinary training. My relationship to the food of my culture has evolved over time, just as my identity has evolved. I hope to be able to contribute to the conversation on identity as expressed through the medium of cuisine.

Artist Bio

I am a primary care doctor, chef, food writer and cooking instructor. I have had a lifelong passion for food and communicating with people in different places and cultures through this creative, delicious and nourishing medium. I am fiercely proud of my Taiwanese beef noodle soup, but know my mom’s is still better. When I am not teaching people how to cook healthy food, I bake with copious amounts of butter and cream. In addition to the current Transformation exhibit, ’ve previously participated in AAWAA’s Hungry Ghosts exhibits in 2012 and 2015. My recipes and writing also appear on my blog, Spiceboxtravels.com, and in publications including The Washington Post, The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, Smithsonian Magazine, Remedy Quarterly, Salon, BlogHer, Culinate, Zester Daily, Asia Magazine, Food52 and the Yahoo Shine Supper Club.
