ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Flying Fish aims to expose – and bridge – the gap between Asian American women and Asian women living in America. The exhibition comes from the idea of being as happy as a fish and as free as a bird. It is cold and dark under water, making it sometimes difficult to see where we are going. A fish, however, can swim up with enough force to jump into the air. The 11 artists in this exhibit come from different regions and different personal backgrounds. Their unconventional combinations of East and West communicate the cross-cultural experience in new ways and showcase the progress and innovation made in contemporary Asian American female art.

ABOUT THE CURATORS

Mido Lee is a feminist artist from Taiwan. She earned an MA in humanities and social science in photography from Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland in 2010 and an MFA in photography from San Francisco Art Institute in 2012. She was also awarded Best of Bay Artist 2010 and selected artists by Richard Bellingham in 2011.  Mido Lee currently lives and works as a curator in San Francisco.

Li Ma (Mary Ma), originally from Fuzhou, China, came to the United States in 2009 with a B.S. in chemical engineering and experience curating industrial exhibitions for multinational corporations, including the PPG Industries exhibition for China Composites Expo 2006. She soon discovered her passion for visual art and has recently exhibited her work nationally, at Gallery 825 in Los Angeles, Root Division and Roll Up Gallery in San Francisco and A.I.R Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. She was also awarded 2012 ARTSlant 3rd round showcase winner. Li Ma currently resides in San Francisco as a MFA candidate in Painting at San Francisco Art Institute.
