Website Customizations

Here is the list of explanations for how to customize the site.

Homepage Slideshow

  • How to add a new slide to the homepage rotation

The starting assumption is that you have some target content, which is either a Page or a Post.

If it is a Post, you can go ahead and configure it as described below. If it is a Page–as is most typical–you will need to first create a Post that will contain the content for the homepage slide.

Since this new Post will contain fragments of information from the target content, start by opening up a browser tab to edit the target content Page. You will need to copy the Title, Slug, Featured Image and content exceprt from the target Page to the homepage slideshow Post.

    1. Create a new Post with the category Homepage Feature (or for target content that is already a Post, add the category Homepage Feature to your Post.)
    2. Set the Title of the Post as you want it to appear beneath the picture
    3. Note: the main content of the Post can be left blank.
    4. Set a featured image for this Post (should have a 4×3 aspect ratio)
    5. If the Excerpt field, enter the HTML you want to appear in the right column.
    6. To specify what order this slide should be in, set the value of the Custom Field Homepage Feature Order to a number: 1 if it is the first slide, 2 if it is the second slide, etc.
    7. To specify the target content, which is where the user goes when they click on the image or link on the homepage slideshow for this slide, enter the slug of the target content in the Custom Field Homepage Feature Slug.
    8. Click the Update button to save these changes.
  • How to delete a slide from the homepage rotation

There are a few things to consdier when removing slides from the homepage slideshow. The best approach depends on what you want to do.

    • You can keep the slide around but just not have it appear. This is useful if you plan to put the slide back in the homepage slideshow at a later date.
    • You can delete the slide altogether. That is best if you never plan to use that slide again, and especially if you are not replacing content, but getting rid of slides.
    • You can just update the content. This allows you to reuse the slide with different content.

Regardless, the first thing to do is locate the Post that defines the slide.

    1. To locate the Post that defines the slide, look in the dashboard for All Posts.
    2. If necessary, sort the list of all posts by the Categories, and look for posts with the category Homepage Feature. It is possible that you will have to look through more than one page of Posts to locate it.
    3. If you are totally removing the slide, you can just click the Trash link, and you are done.
    4. Otherwise, click the Edit link.
    5. If you want to keep the slide for future use but just take it out of rotation, edit the value of the Custom Field Homepage Feature Order and set it to 0. (Or, delete the Custom Field Homepage Feature Order.)
    6. If you are re-using this slide, then update all the other slideshow content (title, featured image, exceprt and slug) as appropriate.
    7. Click the Update button to save these changes.
  • How to reorder the slides in the homepage rotation

You will have to edit the Custom Field Homepage Feature Order for each slide that will appear in a different order.

For example, if you are swapping slides 2 & 3, you will have to edit both slides 2 and 3. If you are adding a new slide up front and moving everything else back, you will have to edit every slide.

As described above, slides are represented by Posts with the category Homepage Feature.

    1. To locate the Posts that defines the slides you want to change, look in the dashboard for All Posts.
    2. If necessary, sort the list of all posts by the Categories, and look for posts with the category Homepage Feature. It is possible that you will have to look through more than one page of Posts to locate them.
    3. Click the Edit link for each Post you want to reorder.
    4. For each Post, set the value of the Custom Field Homepage Feature Order to a number, like 1, 2 or 3, that represents the order in which you want the slide to appear.
    5. Click the Update button to save the changes for each Post.
  • How to adjust the tempo of slide transitions

The default duration for each slide to display is 3 seconds. However, this can be changed by defining a duration in the first slide in the slideshow.

    1. To locate the Post that defines the first page in the slideshow, look in the dashboard for All Posts.
    2. If necessary, sort the list of all posts by the Categories, and look for posts with the category Homepage Feature. It is possible that you will have to look through more than one page of Posts to locate them.
    3. Click the Edit link for the Post that defines the first slide. To verify if you have the right Post, check the value of the Hompage Feature Order Custom Field, which should be 1.
    4. Assuming this is the correct post, set the value of the Custom Field Homepage Feature Duration to the number of milliseconds. For example, for a 5 second duration, enter 5000.
    5. Click the Update button to save the changes.

Technical notes about theme customization

  • theme file: index.php added slideshow and removed default post content
  • use of featured image and custom fields in Pages (and Posts)
  • It would be fairly easy to enhance this to allow slide-specific durations, so that not every slide was the same duration.

Footer

Note that the footer has structure: Footer Groups and links.

  • The Footer Group has a larger name and appears as the heading
  • The rest of the links appear underneath a heading, in two columns if there are more than five links per group.

You can add, remove and update individual links or entire Footer Groups.

  • How to change the order of the Footer Groups
    1. Locate the Pages/Posts of all Footer Group headers for which you want to change their order.
    2. Open each of these Pages/Posts for editing.
    3. For each Page/Post, change the value of the Custom Field Footer Group Sort Order to reflect the new order you would like.
    4. Click the Update button to save the change for each Page/Post.
  • How to change the name of a Footer Group
    1. Locate the Pages/Posts of all links in the Footer Group for which you want to change the header name. This includes the header link.
    2. Open each of these Pages/Posts for editing.
    3. For each Page/Post, change the value of the Custom Field Footer Group to reflect the new name.
    4. Click the Update button to save the change for each Page/Post.
  • How to remove a Footer Group

Note that if you are going to move some of the links within a Footer Group that you are abandoning to other groups, you should do that first.

    1. Locate the Pages/Posts of all links in the Footer Group you want to remove. This includes the header link.
    2. Open each of these Pages/Posts for editing.
    3. For each Page/Post, delete the Custom Fields Footer Group, Footer Sort Order and Footer Group Sort Order.
    4. Click the Update button to save the change for each Page/Post.

Note that in order to remove a link from the footer, you only actually have to remove the Footer Group. If you expect to put it back later, you could keep the other two footer fields intact.

Technical notes about theme customization

  • theme file: footer.php added slideshow and commented out default content
  • use custom fields in Pages (and Posts)

Pages or Posts appear on the footer when then have the following Custom Fields defined:

    • Footer Group specifies which group this link is in.
    • Footer Sort Order specifies the placement of a link within a Footer Group. This order starts with the header, whose Footer Sort Order is 0. The first link below the header will have a Footer Sort Order of 1, and so forth.
    • Footer Group Sort Order is only necessary for header links of each Footer Group. This specfies the order of the group where a Footer Group Sort Order of 1 defines the first group, which appears on the left.

Technical notes

theme file: sidebar-header.php replaced default table with custom content

Main Nav/Sidebar Nav

The Sidebar Nav is sourced from the same set of pages as the main nav.

To get a page to show up in the navigation, make sure it is a Page (not a Post).
Pick the appropriate Parent. (Or “no parent” if it is a top-level Page.)
Set the Order.

Events

Regarding the distinctions between Events/Current Events and Past Events

The Current Events and Events pages are conceptually the same. They mean the same thing, they should have identical content: They both show the five most current events.

The Current Events page is only necessary because when you are on the Past Events page, it is otherwise not clear how to get to the current events page. If you are changing the number of events that appear on these pages, you will however have to edit both pages Events and Current Events.

The Past Events page shows all past events, which means any events for which the Expiration Date is not in the future. These are shown with the most recent events first.
